The Relay For LifeŽ is coming back to Second LifeŽ for a fourth consecutive year! The volunteer community is in the midst of preparing the largest contiguous event Second LifeŽ has ever seen. We hope you will join us there!
In 2005, the Relay for LifeŽ in Second LifeŽ was attended by a few hundred avatars and raised almost $5,000 for the American Cancer Society. Last year, the 2007 RFLofSL raised more than $118,000 and attracted more than 1,700 avatar participants to the walkathon event! The track was themed Quest For a Cure and was created by more than 75 volunteers. Avatars were treated to virtual scenes from action and adventure stories. Participants encountered opportunities along the way to have fun while donating money - lighting virtual luminaries, and participating in events such as musical performances, sky diving, roller coaster rides, and treasure hunts.
The American Cancer Society Relay For LifeŽ began in May 1985 when a colorectal surgeon ran around a track in Tacoma, Washington, for 24 hours, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. Today Relay For Life is held in more than 4,600 communities in the United States and in 23 countries across the globe. To date, Relay For Life has raised more than $1.5 billion to help the Society accelerate the progress against cancer by saving lives, helping those touched by cancer, and empowering people to fight back against this disease.

Our Expanding Role in the Second Life Community
The Society has expandied its role in the SL community by establishing our own American Cancer Society Island. This virtual space serves a number of purposes including an interactive cancer information resource center, a venue for peer support groups, as well as a headquarters for in-world event planning. We are appreciative of all of the volunteers who have been busy planning events and making improvement to our island and we hope you will visit it soon.

What is Second LifeŽ ?

What is the Relay for LifeŽ in Second LifeŽ?
It's a volunteer-driven effort to hold an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event in the Second LifeŽ world. It's a walk-a-thon in cyberspace, where SL residents gather, camp out, dance, donate money and of course walk our custom built track that encompasses the 96 acre park.

How is this Relay different than my local Relay?
The main difference is location. SL residents set up and decorate campsites, and sell small items to help raise Relay money just like at your local relay. However, since this is a virtual environment you may see some teams offering blimp rides, or holding sailboat races inside the park.
How can I participate in the SLRFL?
To be a virtual walker you'll need to sign up for an account at www.Secondlife.com. A lifetime membership is free. Once inside Second LifeŽ you can fully participate in this fun online version of the American Cancer Society's Relay For LifeŽ. You can create teams with your friends and family from around the country, hold fund raisers and make donations. Keep informed of all the festivities at www.RFLofSL.com.
