Recognizing the increased need for affordable housing for cancer patients, the American Cancer Society opened a Hope Lodge in Atlanta. Emory University generously donated the land, and the American Cancer Society raised the additional funds from organizations, companies, and individuals. In 1998 the Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge opened in Atlanta, Ga.

Since opening its doors in 1998, the Atlanta Hope Lodge has provided over 90,000 nights of free lodging to more than 5,000 patients and caregivers.

The 52-room facility offers free lodging as well as free transportation to treatment facilities for Hope Lodge guests. Some of the amenities of the Atlanta Hope Lodge include: a common kitchen, dining room, a business center, gardens, and laundry facilities.

It is with donated funds from individuals, corporations and medical facilities that the Atlanta Hope Lodge is able to provide a place where medical treatment can be the first focus for the patient and family, and they can be free from worrying about the costs of lodging.

Danny Sheltz is the Atlanta Hope Lodge Operations Manager. He comes to the American Cancer Society with over 20 years of corporate coaching and leading not-for-profit organizations influencing young people as a motivational speaker, crisis counselor, and leadership trainer. You will see Danny walking the halls of the Hope Lodge with many "high-fives" and handshakes encouraging guests in their time of need. He takes care of the staff and volunteers while managing finances and facility use on a daily basis.

Here are a few other members of the Atlanta Hope Lodge family:

Kimberly Cole-Floyd serves as the Assistant Manager that covers the night shift from Sunday evening to Friday morning. Kimberly comes to us from Phoenix Center Micasa Group Home where she managed a staff of 12 employees and 20 residents in a substance abuse group home for women and children. Kimberly is a great asset to our team as she has much experience in developing treatment plans for each of the residents, planning and organizing the activities for the house, facilitating weekly sessions with all of the residents to discuss house issues, insuring that all house rules were followed by staff and residents, and handling any conflicts that arises. Kimberly and her husband are former guests at the Atlanta Hope Lodge in 2008. She understands the dynamics of the Lodge as her husband under went treatments. She is a strong supporter of Relay For Life and has volunteered many years to ensure its success in our area. She is highly organized and loves going the extra mile on putting her special touches on creating peaceful environments.

Marie Fairnot, Barbara Morgan, and Brian Pirkle serve as the transportation coordinators. They bring experience in caring for guests and a commitment to offer the best service to our guests. They are responsible for ensuring the safe arrival of guests to and from their treatment centers.

Brianna Pogal-Tobin, Wiffi Harris, Ashley Sinclair, Marc Holmes, and Kala Hurst assist the operations manager as they serve as weekend managers. Their loving support is evident to all as there is never a time at the Atlanta Hope Lodge where there is not a staff person on campus. They are here to serve you.

Our mission and purpose is to provide a nurturing "home away from home" for our guests. We look forward to serving you in the future and invite each of you to visit us at the Atlanta Hope Lodge!

Thank you ... to the volunteers at the Atlanta Hope Lodge

Thanks are in order to the many people, organizations, hospitals and friends who make the operation of Hope Lodge possible. We always have opportunities at Guest Services, House Cleaning, Community Service, and Volunteer Dinners.  With out their support, we would not be able provide such a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.  Join the fight for more birthdays, by calling 404.327.9200 for volunteering.
