Eligibility Requirements
The Hope Lodge is available for adults receiving outpatient cancer treatment who live more than 40 miles away from their treatment center. Their treatment must require a three-day or longer stay in that area. Patients must be able to care for themselves, and are allowed one adult guest to stay with them in their room.
Additional Requirements:
- Over 18 years of age
- Have a permanent residence and will the Hope Lodge upon my arrival with a copy of my driver's license or other proof of residence (Utility bill, State ID card, etc.)
- Agree to stay at the Hope Lodge only between the start and end date for treatment as specified on the referral form
- Not currently under parole for a felony charge, and I have not been convicted of a felony in the past 5 years
- Agree to be admitted no sooner than one day prior to treatment initiation and will vacate the Lodge no later than 24 hours following completion of treatment
To stay at Hope Lodge, you must be referred by your Baltimore-area physician or health care professional. The Hope Lodge staff will coordinate with your health care professional to put your name on our wait list. It is advisable to initiate the referral process well in advance of the first date of treatment, as patients are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

The Hope Lodge provides the essentials: towels, blanket, sheets, pillows, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies etc.
What you need to bring:
- Your food selections (You will have limited refrigerator space and a four-shelf storage cabinet.)
- Clothing and Personal products (shampoo, razor, etc.)
However, to make the Hope Lodge more "homey" you may also bring the following from home:
- Extra pillows, blankets, favorite towels
- Personal items such as pictures, stuffed animals, etc.
Is there a set time period on how long I can stay at the Baltimore Hope Lodge?
No, there is no time limit. As long as you are receiving treatment, you are welcome to remain at the lodge as our guests. Residents may remain at the Hope Lodge for an additional 24 hours following their last cancer treatment.
Does the Baltimore Hope Lodge have wireless capabilities?
Yes, the Baltimore Hope Lodge does have limited wireless access available to residents.
Are meals served?
No, guests are responsible for their own food and food preparation. However, through the generosity of many local community groups, churches and friends of the Hope Lodge dinners are provided on average once or twice during the week for guests and caregivers.
Is there a charge to stay at the Lodge?
No. Staying at the Baltimore Hope Lodge does not cost anything.
How do I handle house cleaning?
Cleaning supplies are furnished. Residents are responsible for cleaning up after themselves in all areas of the Baltimore Hope Lodge.
Are there laundry facilities?
Yes. Laundry rooms are located on all three floors. Residents are responsible for all personal laundry, including towels and bedding (which are provided).
Are there social activities at the Baltimore Hope Lodge?
Yes, the Baltimore Hope Lodge does have various social activities during the week. For example, there may be yoga classes, dance classes, bingo, cooking classes, holiday events and dinners sponsored by generous civic organizations.
How many people can stay in a room?
Two people can stay in a room: the patient and the caregiver.
Are children allowed?
Residents of the Baltimore Hope Lodge must be at least 18 years of age. Visitors 15 and older are welcome with the Manager’s permission.
Is transportation available?
Yes. Shuttle transportation is provided to various area treatment locations.
What should I bring (toilet paper, paper towels, linens, etc.)?
You should bring any personal belongings that will make your room feel more like home. The Baltimore Hope Lodge provides cleaning supplies, bath towels, hand towels, washcloths and bedding in every room.
What are the hours of operation?
The Hope Lodge hours of operation are from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily.
Can residents eat in the rooms?
No. Food and beverages are not allowed in individual rooms.
Is there a telephone in the room with voice mail?
Yes, there is a telephone with voice mail in every room.
Following are some of the programs regularly held at the American Cancer Society Baltimore Hope Lodge. Unless otherwise stated, all programs are open at no cost to all cancer patients and their caregivers.
Look Good...Feel Better
For women only, learn how to overcome the physical side effects of cancer treatments. A professional cosmetologist will show you how to enhance your appearance with make-up lessons, skin care, wigs and scarves.
Caregiver Support Groups
This group is for caregivers only. Led by a health care professional for caregivers to openly discuss concerns and receive encouragement to care for their loved one.
Hope Lodge 25 Year Celebration

Baltimore Hope Lodge Highlights
Hope Lodge provides a home away from home for cancer survivors who must travel to receive their treatment. Each year, we provide thousands of nights of lodging to survivors and their caregivers. Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, we are able to offer this service to our guests at no cost. 2011 was a phenomenal year for Hope Lodge. This report highlights our successes and the high quality services we provided to the communities we serve.
John Steadman Tournament of Hope
The John Steadman tournament brings together the Greater Baltimore corporate community for a wonderful day of fun, fellowship, and fundraising for Hope Lodge.
