 Our History click to expand

Established in 1970, the Charleston Hope Lodge was the first hospitality house of its kind in the country. The concept came from Margot Freudenberg, a leader in the Charleston medical and business communities, who saw a similar facility while traveling through Australia and New Zealand with President Eisenhower's People to People Ambassador Program.

The Exchange Club of Charleston purchased the first home at 267 Calhoun Street, which served as the American Cancer Society office as well as the Hope Lodge. During that time, cancer treatment was mostly inpatient and most people just stayed at the Lodge before traveling long distances to their homes. As outpatient treatment became more prevalent, more patients needed to stay and the waiting list grew significantly.

The Hope Lodge was expanded in 1997 and renovated in 2001. The latest expansion began in 2007. At that time the Hope Lodge campus was named the Carol Grotnes Belk Campus. Each house retains the name of its benefactor. The houses are: 267 - The J. Henry Stuhr, Exchange Club of Charleston House; 269 - The Barbara and Edwin Pearlstine House; 271 - The Gene Reed House; and 273 - The Parker Miracle House.
