About Our Facility

The Grand Rapids Hope Lodge is the first Hope Lodge in Michigan and the Society’s 25th in the country. The Hope Lodge is located in downtown Grand Rapids’ Heartside neighborhood, just minutes from the area’s top medical facilities. Offering lodging and transportation to and from Grand Rapids cancer treatment centers free of charge, the Hope Lodge is a home-away-from-home for adult cancer patients and their caregivers who must travel to Grand Rapids for treatment.

Aside from treatment, lodging and transportation are among the highest costs associated with a cancer diagnosis. By helping to defray these costs, the Hope Lodge serves as one of the most tangible demonstrations of the American Cancer Society’s mission in the community.

Guests at the Hope Lodge have individual rooms and share common areas, such as living rooms and kitchens. The interaction with other patients, caregivers, staff, and volunteers provides for an atmosphere of hope, compassion, and friendship that is so important in the cancer journey.

Music, yoga, arts and crafts, and various other activities are some of the activities Hope Lodge guests can enjoy during their stay. Over the past several years, Grand Rapids’ medical community has become a leader in medical research and a top destination for cancer treatment in the region. Because of this, and thanks to the overwhelming generosity and support from West Michigan’s philanthropic community, Grand Rapids was selected as a location for Michigan’s first Hope Lodge.

After a more than six-year campaign, the Hope Lodge Capital Campaign Committee, chaired by local community leaders Frank Merlotti, Jr. and Alex DeYonker, was successful in raising more than $6.8 million towards the construction of the Hope Lodge. Ground was broken on the Hope Lodge, Peter M. Wege Guest House in fall of 2006, and opened its doors to patients for the first time on February 3, 2008.

Thanks to the generosity of West Michigan’s philanthropic community, the Hope Lodge opened February 3, 2008 and has been serving patients from all across Michigan and beyond ever since.

Following a successful capital campaign that raised more than $6.8 million towards the construction of the Hope Lodge, the American Cancer Society Great Lakes Division is now embarking on an endowment campaign to support operating expenses and provide financial security for the future of the Lodge.
