About Our Facility

Welcome to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Kansas City . We understand that undergoing treatment for cancer can be both financially and emotionally overwhelming. In an effort to ease the burden of cancer, the American Cancer Society provides free housing to cancer patients traveling to Kansas City for treatment.

Finding emotional and social support from other survivors can be as important as getting the proper medical care. At Hope Lodge, patients live with other patients going through similar experiences and are supported by caring staff and volunteers. The nurturing, comfortable environment provided to patients during their stay allows them to focus on what is most important—fighting cancer!

Hope Lodge is also a place to learn about cancer and how best to fight the disease.  Guests have access to the American Cancer Society's 24-hour toll-free call center, Web site, and comprehensive on-site libraries full of information. Guests are welcome to utilize or participate in any of the American Cancer Society on-site programs and services such as Look Good...Feel Better and free wigs/head coverings. At Hope Lodge, cancer patients and their loved ones are armed with the vital information to help them make informed decisions.

Nestled downtown in the quaint Quality Hill district, the Hope Lodge in Kansas City provides a home away from home for cancer patients who have traveled from out of town for treatment. For 365 days a year, the Hope Lodge provides patients with easy access to some of the nation's leading medical institutions while offering a caring, community environment during their stay.  Built in September 2000, the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Kansas City has served an estimated 8,000 cancer patients and caregivers.  The Hope Lodge in Kansas City services more than 1,693 patients and caregivers each year, completely free of charge.

The Hope Lodge is a modern brick building featuring 45 guest room suites. Each room has two twin beds, an alarm clock, a large bureau, a private bath, and telephone with voice mail. Hope Lodge also provides centrally located, fully-equipped kitchenettes with refrigerators, freezers, and secured lockers for food storage. Guests may also enjoy the newly renovated patio area with gas grill. Guests can visit with one another in the spacious dining room, or spend time in one of the three day rooms for quiet activity. Onsite laundry rooms are available free of charge for guests. For entertainment, guests can utilize our movie room where they may watch movies or take a movie to their room to enjoy. The Hope Lodge offers internet via Wi Fi, and desktop computers are available in each day room. The fitness room provides a treadmill to help guests maintain a healthy lifestyle, while the outdoor courtyard provides a serene setting in downtown Kansas City

For many patients, the Hope Lodge is more than just a place to stay. The staff and volunteers provide a home-like nurturing environment, so patients can get support from others going through similar experiences.  A cancer survivor's recovery involves much more than medical treatments; it takes hope to heal.  Hope Lodge offers the warmth and security of home in a setting where the love and encouragement of others enlighten and inspire guests.  At Hope Lodge, guests rally around each other to build life-affirming connections and lifetime friendships.

Thanks to the Hope Lodge, cancer patients traveling to the Kansas City area for treatment now have a home away from home.

American Cancer Society volunteers serve a vital role in our day-to-day operations.  There are many tasks and chores available to the willing volunteer. Tasks include helping with light housework, managing the hospitality desk, organizing complimentary guest dinners, facilitating group activities, or driving guests on community outings.

Although taking a tour of Hope Lodge prior checking into the Hope Lodge is not always convenient, we recommend that the patient and caregiver do so if possible.  Our staff guarantee to make you feel welcome long before you arrive.

Guest related questions:

The Hope Lodge is a smoke-free building.  Smoking is not permitted on the property of Hope Lodge or the parking garage of the American Cancer Society.

Alcohol is not permitted in the Hope Lodge. Guests may not bring in any alcohol while staying at the Lodge.

What to Bring:

All guests are responsible for their own meals, food, and personal toiletries.

Food storage space is limited, so only bring a few days worth of food. A list of area grocers and pharmacies is provided along with driving directions. Hope Lodge volunteers provide weekly trips to area grocers for guests needing transportation assistance.

Hope Lodge provides fully equipped kitchenettes with dishes, pots, pans, refrigerators, freezers, and cupboards food storage.

Hope Lodge provides the following items: coffee, cleaning supplies, and paper products.  Bed linens, blankets, spreads, and pillows are also provided.

Where do I park my car?

The Kansas City Hope Lodge has a secure, on-site parking garage that is free to guests. All guests are guaranteed one parking spot in the garage.

Do I need to bring cooking supplies?

Hope Lodge has pots, pans, microwaves, toasters, blenders, crock pots, skillets, mixing bowls, cutting boards, and practically every cooking utensil one could think of. Every guest has space to store frozen, refrigerated, and dry good foods. Guests must bring their own food or purchase it at a local grocery store. Food storage is limited, so it is wise to only bring enough food for a couple of days.

Should I bring my own linens?

Lodge supplies bed and bath linens. However, many of our guests like a special pillow, favorite quilt, special blanket, or preferred towel. Please bring items that will make your stay feel more like home.

Is there maid service?

No. We have a full-time housekeeper who has sanitized and prepared your room. The housekeeper cleans the kitchens and common areas, but guests are required to clean up after themselves in order to keep the Hope Lodge sanitary and clean. The Lodge provides all cleaning supplies. We provide free washers and dryers; we only ask that you bring your own laundry detergent. Guests are welcome to wash their linens and clothes as often as needed.

Can I have visitors?

Yes, of course. We have many lovely areas to entertain your guests. For everyone's protection, we do ask that you ask your visitors to stay away from the lodge if they are ill.

Can my child stay with me while I am receiving treatment?

Unfortunately children under the age of 18 are not allowed to stay at Hope Lodge. Please contact your referring professional for other housing options in the area.

I have a vehicle, but I am afraid to drive in the city while receiving treatment. Will the Hope Lodge provide transportation?

Fortunately, the Hope Lodge is centrally located, and the trip to a local treatment facility is not too far away. The Hope Lodge will not be able to provide patient transportation to treatment.

I would like to check in on Sunday. I have an appointment on Monday for cancer treatment. Is that okay?

Guests may check in 24 hours prior to appointment and must check out within 48 hours of last appointment.

I would like to check in at 8 p.m. Is that okay?

The Lodge prefers all new check-ins occur before 6 p.m. although some exceptions can be made through prior arrangements.

I would like to bring a coffee pot for my room. Can I do that?

No, guests are not allowed to bring cooking or heating devices to use in their rooms. The Hope Lodge provides coffee pots, coffee, and heating devices for guests in the dining area.


Referral related questions:

This patient does not have any family or support. She is older and may need some additional assistance. Can you check on her occasionally?

The Hope Lodge is not a medical facility. Guests must be able to take care of themselves, maintain cleanliness of their room, and prepare their own meals. If they cannot do this, they must be accompanied by a Support Person.

We have a BMT patient we feel can stay on his own. Can you make an exception?

BMT patients must have a support person and transportation at all times.

Unfortunately, we have had to call the family due to an end-of-life situation. Can the family have a second room?

Exceptions for a second room will be considered for this situation if the Hope Lodge has rooms available.

This patient is currently homeless. Do you offer assistance for housing or food?

If additional services are needed, the Social Worker must make arrangements prior to referring the patient to the Hope Lodge. The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge does not offer housing, food, or financial assistance.
 

Residency at a Hope Lodge facility is a courtesy extended at the sole discretion of American Cancer Society. All individuals who meet the Hope Lodge eligibility requirements will be welcomed regardless of race, creed, citizenship, physical disability, gender, color, ethnic heritage, veteran status, economic status, or sexual orientation.
