Hope Lodge Lubbock Launches “Friends of Hope”
In July 2010, the American Cancer Society opened its first Hope Lodge in Texas, Hope Lodge Lubbock – offering cancer patients and their caregiver a free ‘home away from home’ while traveling to Lubbock for cancer treatment. In just six months, the Lodge welcomed it 100th guest – demonstrating the patient’s vital need to access housing during treatment.
Providing and maintaining the warm, hospitable environment of Hope Lodge Lubbock costs the American Cancer Society approximately $1,000 a day. On Jan. 27, nearly 30 supporters gathered for the Society’s launch of Friends of Hope, a program to support Hope Lodge Lubbock with its daily operations and patient programs.
“Everyone has a connection to cancer, and in West Texas we understand the daily impact cancer can have on families from rural areas,” said Mikell Bollinger, director of major gifts with the American Cancer Society. “By becoming a Friend of Hope, supporters can help ease the financial burden for those traveling to Lubbock.”
It is through generous donors that Hope Lodge Lubbock keeps its doors open. “We hope to identify 100 friends within the first year of our campaign to help support the operational costs and patient programs of Hope Lodge Lubbock – providing 100 more days of lodging,” said Mikell.
As a Friend of Hope, an individual or organization will serve as an ambassador for the Lodge by helping to strengthen community awareness and making a monetary donation. The Friend of Hope program allows donors to contribute at three different levels, and each Friend will be recognized on the Friends of Hope Donor Wall.
