Over 23,000 people across Minnesota are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of these patients often spend weeks or months away from home while undergoing required lifesaving treatment at cancer centers in the Twin Cities area. In December 2007. The Richard M. Schulze Family American Cancer Society Hope Lodge opened its doors and became the 25th Hope Lodge location and the 2nd Hope Lodge location in Minnesota.

The construction of the Hope lodge building has been a community effort with a $5 million challenge grant donation from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, which was matched with another $5 million from individual donations. The land was provided by the University of Minnesota through the Minnesota Medical Foundation and the University’s Cancer Center.

The Minneapolis Hope Lodge program provides 41 private guest rooms, free of charge, to cancer patients and their caregiver who reside at least 40 miles away, and who are undergoing active cancer treatment.
