The Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania is available for adults receiving outpatient cancer treatment who live more than 40 miles away from their treatment center. Preference will be given to those who require a three-day or longer stay in that area for their treatment. Patients must be able to care for themselves, and must be accompanied by a caregiver throughout the duration of their stay at the Hope Lodge.
- Over 18 years of age
- Have a permanent residence and will provide the Hope Lodge upon arrival with a copy of driver’s license or other proof of residence (utility bill, state ID card, etc.) if requested
- Agree to stay at the Hope Lodge only between the start and end date for treatment as specified on the referral form
- Not currently under parole for a felony charge, and have not been convicted of a felony in the past 5 years
- Agree to be admitted no sooner than one day prior to treatment initiation and will vacate the Lodge no later than 24 hours following completion of treatmen
All patients residing at the Lodge must have a caregiver with them during their stay. The role of caregiver requires many levels of care, and it is imperative that each person assigned to be a caregiver meets the following requirements while staying at Hope Lodge:
- Physical: Caregiver must actually be present.
- Doorman/bellhop: Take belongings to and from room and car.
- Housekeeper: Clean up after patient. Keep room clean during stay.
- Cook: Provide sufficient proper meals for patient and self.
- Nurse: Follow detailed hospital instructions for caring for patient.
- Secretary: Fill out and handle paperwork
- Emotional: Maturity in special situations
- First Responder: Locate contact numbers (doctor, nurse, Lodge staff) if an emergency situation arises.
- Caregivers also must be able to accept differences in people staying at Hope Lodge who come from all over the world, from all walks of life, and with many different backgrounds.

Hope Lodge will then contact you to confirm receipt of referral and your status. You will either be confirmed for a room on the dates provided to us by social work, or put on a wait list.
During this time you are strongly encouraged to stay in contact with Hope Lodge on your own behalf. Additionally we must know of any schedule changes. At this point, the hospital will no longer communicate with us regarding your reservation; therefore it is your responsibility to ensure the status of your reservation or future reservations.
If you are put on a wait list we will contact you when a room becomes available, however you will need to go back to the social worker assigned to your case to develop a back-up plan in the event a room does not become available. You may call us to check on your reservation status as well.
Hope Lodge office receives new incoming guests from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Guests with special circumstances needing to arrive earlier than the 11 a.m. or later than the 7 p.m. requested time frame must call ahead to make arrangements.
Upon arrival you will be greeted and brought into our office area to complete paperwork. After completion of paperwork we will give you a tour of the facility and go over specific policies of Hope Lodge. This process takes up to 30 minutes so if you have anyone with you, please bring them inside rather than have them waiting in the car. We suggest that all parties that will be staying a Hope Lodge take part in the tour, however if a patient does not feel up to it, we understand.
Any subsequent caregivers or overnight guests must stop in the office to sign paperwork and must have the tour as well.
When the tour is complete, you may bring your things into your room and get settled in. At this point you will have a key to the building and to your own room so you are free to come and go as you please. You will be given a private phone number and voicemail access code that we strongly encourage you share with doctors, nurses, and outside callers. Cell phones are permitted and can be used for this purpose also. Calling the office is not the most efficient way to reach a guest.
The office is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. if you need assistance. There is staff on the premises on call 24 hours in the event a guest needs urgent support. Please remember that there is no medical staff present and no medical care can be administered from Hope Lodge staff. Emergencies must call 911.
In addition to private sleeping rooms, the Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania offers kitchen facilities with free coffee and tea, free laundry facilities including soap, access to the hospital shuttle service for transportation to and from appointments, and complimentary dinners on occasion.
In addition to these practical services, we feel that staying at Hope Lodge, living with others going through the same thing you are, helps you learn how to manage the physical, emotional and practical challenges cancer treatment away from home brings.
The following are some of the programs regularly held that the Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania guests can easily access. Unless otherwise stated, all programs are open at no cost to all cancer patients, their families and friends, and to cancer survivors.
Bone Marrow Transplant Support Group
Located in the hospital dining room C. Held the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.
Blood Cancer Support Group
Located in the hospital dining room A. Held the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.
Breast Cancer Support Group
Located in the Women's Health Center, 2nd floor conference room. Held the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m.
Volunteer groups regularly provide dinners for all Hope Lodge guests. Join us for good food, friendship, and fun.

Is there a set time period on how long I can stay at the Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania?
No, there is no time limit. As long as you are receiving treatment, you are welcome to remain at the Lodge as our guests. Residents may remain at the Hope Lodge for an additional 24 hours following their last cancer treatment.
Does the Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania have wireless capabilities?
Yes, at this time it is possible to access the internet within close proximity to our computer in the common area. Also available to residents is a phone jack in each room dedicated for dial up internet access.
Are meals served?
Yes and no. Thanks to our friends and volunteers of the Hope Lodge, dinners are provided approximately once a week for the residents. However, for all other meals, residents are responsible for purchasing their own food and preparing their own meals.
Is there a charge to stay at the Lodge?
No. Staying at the Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania is free of charge thanks to the generosity of donors.
How do I handle house cleaning?
Residents are responsible for cleaning up after themselves in all areas of the Hope Lodge.
Are there laundry facilities?
Yes. A laundry room is located at the back of the building. Residents are responsible for all personal laundry, with the exception of towels and bedding (which are provided). Laundry detergent, softener, and bleach are also provided to the guests at no charge thanks to our dedicated donors.
Are there social activities at the Hope Lodge?
Yes, Hope Lodge does have various social activities on occasion. For example, dinners, bingo, jigsaw puzzles, movies, and crafting are all offered from time to time.
How many people can stay in a room?
Two people can stay in a room: the patient and the caregiver.
Are children allowed?
Residents of the Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania must be at least 18 years of age.
Is transportation available?
Yes. Shuttle transportation is provided by the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center shuttle service and will transport to treatment areas there.
What should I bring (toilet paper, paper towels, linens, etc.)?
You should bring any personal belongings that will make your room feel more like home. The Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania provides cleaning supplies, paper products, bath towels, hand towels, washcloths and bedding in every room.
What are the hours of operation?
The Hope Lodge office hours of operation are from 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. daily.
Can residents eat in the rooms?
No. Food and beverages are not allowed in individual rooms.
Is there a telephone in the room with voice mail?
Yes, there is a telephone with voice mail in every room.
