Stories and Comments
When Tony Crea found out he had cancer, many things were going through his mind. Who would take care of his wife and daughter? What about the house? How would he afford to stay in Philadelphia, where he was being treated at the Fox Chase Cancer Center? Tony, a resident of Archbald, Pa. originally planned to commute back and forth to treatments, but soon found out that he was too sick to drive. That’s when he turned to the American Cancer Society.
“When someone tells you ‘you have cancer,’ you think it’s a death sentence,” he said. “The American Cancer Society gave me hope.”
Tony was one of the first guests at the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge of the American Cancer Society, which celebrated its first birthday this May. He and his caregivers, his wife Maureen and daughter Tanya, stayed at the Lodge for about two months while he was undergoing treatments in 2009.
Since the cost of a hotel stay in the Philadelphia area can reach more than $150.00 per night, a free stay at the Lodge is a welcome alternative. Guests have all the comforts of home including private rooms; a community kitchen where they can store food and prepare meals, a dining room, living rooms, a library and a fitness room.
“Being able to stay at the Lodge for free was such a relief,” he said. “It allowed me to concentrate on getting well and beating this disease.”
These days Tony’s cancer is in remission, and he and his family are back home in Archbald. He is giving back by telling his story to others.
“We need to get the word out about Hope Lodge and all that the American Cancer Society has to offer people," said Tony. “It's truly a blessing."
