Michael J. Thun, MD, MS, American Cancer Society vice president emeritus of surveillance and epidemiology research, was recently selected to deliver the inaugural award address for the newly established Charles A. LeMaistre Lecture in Oncology and Cancer Prevention at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. This award was named to honor Dr. Charles A. LeMaistre, former president of the American Cancer Society and founder of the cancer prevention program at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Thun's lecture focused on a recent review, published by him and fellow American Cancer Society epidemiologist Eric Jacobs, PhD, indicating that new evidence of a potential role for aspirin in reducing the risk of cancer death brings us considerably closer to including cancer prevention in clinical guidelines for the use of aspirin as preventative care. Several important questions remain unanswered, however, such as the exact magnitude of the overall cancer benefit and which individual cancer sites contribute to this benefit.
