Staying With Us

All accommodations are provided based on eligibility requirements and are subject to availability. Requests for lodging are met on a first-come, first-served basis, and must come via a referral on the patient’s medical team. Eligibility Requirements

Patients must be referred to the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Hope Lodge by a hospital social worker or designated hospital staff person.

To be eligible to stay at the Hope Lodge, patients must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 or older.
  • Require lodging for a minimum of three nights.
  • Receiving outpatient treatment for cancer. Treatment is defined as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and some clinical trials

Caregivers must meet the following eligibility guidelines:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be ambulatory
  • Be able to take care of patient, able to maintain suite and prepare meals, etc.
  • Be free of communicable diseases
  • Complete orientation

Admission Process

The Hope Lodge admission process begins with a referral from a hospital social worker. If a cancer center does not have a social worker, the designated hospital staff person can refer a patient. Patients must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be 18 or older.
  • Require lodging for a minimum of three nights.
  • Be receiving outpatient treatment for cancer. Treatment is defined as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and some clinical trials.

When we receive a referral, patients are put on a waiting list in the order the referral was received. When a room at the Hope Lodge becomes available, we contact the next person on the list. All patients must attend an orientation before they can check into the Hope Lodge.

What To Bring

Guests should bring the following items for their stay:

  • Extra pillows, blankets, linens or comforters. (sheets, blankets and comforter for 2 twin beds are provided)
  • Personal hygiene items; toiletries
  • Food – enough until you can go shopping.
  • Coffee, creamer, sugar
  • Medications
  • Emergency contact information – names, addresses and phone numbers
  • Postage stamps
  • Telephone calling card for long distance call.
  • Any other personal items that will make you comfortable.
  • Supply of toilet paper, tissues, paper towels.
  • Laundry detergent-HE (high efficiency) and regular washing machines/dryers are available in laundry rooms. You’ll have to determine which detergent is needed after you check in.
  • Cleaning supplies: general bathroom cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, glass cleaner, no bleach products please!
  • Clothes hangers

The Hope Lodge provides:

  • Kitchen cleaning supplies - hand and automatic dishwashing detergent, kitchen towels
  • Kitchen supplies – dishes, glasses, pots, pans, bake ware, storage containers, silverware, knives, serving utensils
  • Kitchen appliances – stoves, dishwashers, ice machines, in-sink garbage disposal, toasters, blenders, hand mixers, coffee pots, microwaves
  • Towels – 2 sets per suite
  • Bed linens – 1 set per twin bed (sheets, blanket and bedspread for twin beds), pillows.
  • Cable television, clock radio and telephone in each suite (free local calling)
  • Free laundry facilities on each floor: Irons, ironing boards, trash can liners, laundry baskets, and vacuum cleaners.
  • We supply a certain amount of coffee. We welcome donations of coffee and paper goods i.e.: paper towels, paper napkins, paper plates, disposable coffee cups etc.
  • Computer with Internet access on each floor
  • Ethernet connection in each suite

Services Provided

The American Cancer Society's Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Hope Lodge is a short-term residential facility designed to offer housing and support free of charge to any cancer patient who travels to the Tampa Bay area for treatment. The Hope Lodge is not a treatment facility and does not provide medical care.

Patients staying at the Hope Lodge may be able to access other local American Cancer Society patient services and programs by calling 1.800.ACS.2345.

News & Events

The Hope Lodge frequently organizes group activities like games, movies and other entertainment. Activities vary by week and time of year, so call the Hope Lodge prior to your visit to determine what activities are scheduled.

Residency at a Hope Lodge facility is a courtesy extended at the sole discretion of American Cancer Society.
