Amy Myers

Director of Philanthropy

Region Covered: San Diego

Amy has spent her 20+ year professional career in the nonprofit sector working directly with key stakeholders, such as individual donors, family foundations, community partners and volunteers, and corporate investors. Amy is enthusiastic about mission-driven work and intensely motivated to make a difference by working at the American Cancer Society. She lost two close friends to aggressive triple negative breast cancer at young ages (35 and 45 years old), which is why Amy is a Team Captain for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Amy has also lost her aunt and many other family friends to cancer. These devastating losses give her a personal stake in the fight against cancer. She is proud to be a part of nationwide and local teams which work passionately to eradicate cancer.

Prior to joining the American Cancer Society in January 2018, Amy served as Philanthropy Officer at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) in La Jolla, California. Amy found it fascinating to learn about cancer research projects from the principal investigators at SBP’s Cancer Center, one of only seven National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated basic research cancer centers in the country. American Cancer Society has funded over $8M in grants at SBP and continues to be a strong partner of SBP’s in local cancer research. Before SBP, Amy spent 14 years with Big Brothers Big Sisters, serving in leadership positions in San Diego County as the Program Director and Director of Corporate Development. She is also a proud Big Sister to Trinity, her Little Sister from the Operation Bigs military mentoring program.

Amy hails from the Kansas City area originally, and she received her undergraduate and master's degrees at Kansas State University. She met her husband, Mike, in San Diego, and he is also a KC native. Amy and Mike enjoy keeping up with their young daughter, Madelyn, and their family loves to explore the outdoors with their Goldendoodle, Murphy.
