American Cancer Society colorectal cancer screening guidelines are developed to save lives by finding colorectal cancer early, when treatment is more likely to be successful, or preventing it in the first place by finding and removing pre-cancerous polyps. ACS regularly reviews the science and updates screening recommendations when new evidence suggests that a change may be needed.
The latest guideline applies to people at average risk for colorectal cancer. Among other recommendations, it says screening for people at average risk should begin at age 45. If you’re age 45 or older, you should start getting screened for colorectal cancer. Several types of tests can be used. Talk to your health care provider about which ones might be good options for you. No matter which test you choose, the most important thing is to get tested.
