As a senior principal scientist and cancer epidemiologist within Surveillance, Prevention, & Health Services Research (SPHeRe), Hyuna Sung, PhD, conducts cancer surveillance research to monitor progress against cancer and uncover health disparities across the cancer continuum, guiding evidence-based prevention and control efforts in the United States and globally.

Research focus and accomplishments

Using population-based cancer registries and other large-scale health datasets, Dr. Sung examines temporal, geographic, and socio-demographic patterns in cancer incidence, mortality, and survival. She applies standard descriptive tools alongside innovative statistical methods to identify emerging trends, understand how changes in cancer burden relate to evolving risk factors and clinical practices, and address the complex medical and social challenges faced by a growing and aging population of cancer survivors.
