About Hope Lodge Dallas

Letter from the Campaign Chairs

Portrait of the Campaign Chairs for the Dallas, TX Hope Lodge

We are Dallas Proud. When Richard was deciding where to headquarter his company, we could have moved anywhere. Dallas was an easy decision. With exceptional schools, wonderful neighborhoods, a thriving arts scene, and first-class medical care, it was a natural choice for where to build our businesses and raise our family.

We have been actively engaged in the American Cancer Society since 1995. When we were asked to chair the Hope Lodge Capital Campaign, it was another easy decision. A place to provide cancer patients and their caregiver's lodging, respite, comradery, and the on-site resources provided by the American Cancer Society is truly a no-brainer. The only question we had was, “Why hasn’t this already been built?” Did you know that Dallas is ranked number 7 in the nation for cancer care? What a point of pride for our city and an amazing resource not only for the residents of DFW but for the thousands of people who travel annually to Dallas for cancer care. Hope Lodge is the missing component for these patients and we fervently believe Dallas needs this vital asset.

We know that patients who complete their treatment have a far higher success rate in fighting their cancers than patients who don’t. Sadly, we also know that patients are less likely to complete these treatments without resources in place for their support. The Hope Lodge is the ultimate resource. It provides patients, along with a caregiver, a free place to stay during treatment. Options for transportation to treatment locations all over the metroplex are located just outside the building. A communal kitchen provides not only a place to store and prepare healthy, less expensive meals, but also becomes a supportive hub where other patients and caregivers share stories, advice, and friendship. In addition, Hope Lodge guests will have access to American Cancer Society programs and services that can help guide them through their cancer experience. Financial burdens are reduced, and patients and their caregivers can focus on priority one – getting well.

As we became actively engaged in studying Hope Lodges across the nation, one fact we loved emerged: to a person, those served by the Hope Lodge always give back, either financially or through volunteer service. This is a powerful testament to the dramatic impact that the Dallas Hope Lodge will have, providing compassion and care for all those who enter its doors. When the Dallas Hope Lodge is complete, it will be yet another reason to be proud of our incredible city.

About Hope Lodge Dallas

Facing cancer is hard. Having to travel out of town for treatment can make it even harder. Yet the American Cancer Society has a place where cancer patients and their caregivers can find help and hope when home is far away - an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.

Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows guests to focus on getting well. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others.

The American Cancer Society is delighted to be in partnership with Baylor Scott & White Health to bring Hope Lodge to the Dallas area. The Baylor University Medical Center campus location offers easy access to all of the city’s major cancer treatment centers.

The Dallas Hope Lodge will include:

  • 50 suites for patients and caregivers in 40,000 square feet of space
  • Communal kitchen and living area
  • 24-hour staffing and onsite parking
  • Hope Lodge Dallas will be a four-story building and the American Cancer Society Dallas office will be a two-story, 15,000 square feet building adjacent to Hope Lodge on the same property

Hope Lodge Dallas was designed by internationally known architectural firm Perkins+Will.

History of Hope Lodge

The American Cancer Society has a long history of providing lifesaving programs and services and is committed to improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Getting the right care sometimes means cancer patients must travel away from home, often to a cancer treatment facility in another city, which places even more of an emotional and financial burden during what is already a challenging time.

The American Cancer Society is trying to make this difficult situation easier for cancer patients and their families through Hope Lodges – free, temporary housing facilities for cancer patients who are undergoing treatment. But Hope Lodges are more than just a place to stay – they provide a home-like nurturing environment, so patients can get support from others going through the same experience. A cancer survivor’s recovery involves much more than medical treatments; it takes hope to heal. Hope Lodge offers the warmth and security of home in a setting where the love and encouragement of others enlighten and inspire guests. At Hope Lodge, guests rally around each other, building life-affirming connections and lifetime friendships.

Hope Lodge is also a place to learn about cancer and how best to fight the disease. Guests have access to the American Cancer Society’s 24-hour toll-free call center, Web site, and comprehensive on-site libraries full of information. At Hope Lodge, cancer patients and their loved ones are armed with the vital information to help them make informed decisions.

In addition to a comfortable and resourceful environment, Hope Lodge also provides convenient accommodations such as private rooms and bathrooms, with space for a family member or caregiver. Lodges offer kitchen facilities and rooms for gathering to watch TV or to share encouragement. Transportation to nearby treatment is also provided through the Lodges. Being a Hope Lodge guest is a courtesy extended at the sole discretion of the American Cancer Society. All individuals who meet Hope Lodge eligibility requirements will be welcomed regardless of race, creed, citizenship, disability, gender, color, ethnic heritage, veteran status, economic status, or sexual orientation.
