Matt Durkan

Director of Major Gifts

Region Covered: California - Los Angeles and Ventura Counties

Matt grew up in Seattle and graduated from Seattle University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities and Fine Arts. After college, he moved to New York City to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and subsequently lived in the city for several years. Soon after arriving in LA, in 2000 he began working in nonprofit fundraising to help local AIDS charities, first as a volunteer, and later as his chosen career path. He continued to build his skills as until he became Development Executive and Director of Major and Planned Gifts working with respected organizations including UCLA, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Betty Ford Center.

As a fundraiser, Matt is passionate about causes that resonate personally with him, including healthcare, education and research. Like most Americans, Matt has been directly affected by cancer, losing his mother and brother to the disease. He is also a proud cancer survivor and is thrilled to be joining the American Cancer Society and our fight against cancer.

Matt likes classic films, mid-century modern art and the HBO series Veep. To stay fit and healthy, Matt loves to snowboard in the winter and surf in the summer. He happily shared “The former I do quite capably, the latter rather clumsily, yet nevertheless both with relish!”
