The American Cancer Society (ACS) Extramural Discovery Science team was proud to host the ACS-Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation Cancer Stem Cell Consortium Annual Retreat in Chicago on July 31 to August 1, 2025.

It was exciting to see the growing momentum of this work, particularly clinical translation of cancer stem cell biology, and the expanding excitement and synergy among the group.

The agenda included scientific updates on the ACS-LDMF-funded projects, sessions for networking and collaboration, and trainee enlightening talks and career development session on grantsmanship and peer review.

There were approximately 45 retreat attendees, including most of the Consortium grantees and trainees from their teams; ACS Discovery leaders Drs. Bill Dahut and Tina Annunziata; Moseley Foundation leadership, and the Consortium scientific leads Drs. Jeremy Rich, Huiping Lui, and Kathy Goss.

The group enjoyed an inspiring keynote by Dr. Luisa Iruela-Irispe on tumor and host interactions. ACS and ACS Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) advocates Alicia Cook and Melissa Rickey shared their lived experience and the urgent importance, now more than ever, of using our collective voices to protect cancer research and funding.

We’re also grateful to colleagues Eileen McCabe, Ally Guthrie, Dr. Nicole Lopanik, and Dr. Gina Kirsammer for making the event such a success and for the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University for being a wonderful host institution.
