Look Good Feel Better for Teens
Look Good Feel Better® for Teens is a is a free national public service program dedicated to helping teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. In addition to the very real physical and emotional concerns of cancer itself, the side effects of treatment such as changes in skin tone and texture, hair loss, and/or weight gain or loss can be devastating to a teen’s developing self-esteem. The Look Good Feel Better for Teens program offers information on how to camouflage these changes, by providing tips on skin care, hair, and makeup, plus information about nutrition, exercise, fitness, and teen social issues.
Information for teens with cancer is available on the Look Good Feel Better website, lookgoodfeelbetter.org. Here, teens can find information to help them deal with appearance, and social and psychological issues of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Look Good Feel Better for Teens’ 2-hour group workshops are offered in host sites where pediatric oncology treatment or support services are available. They are led by volunteer beauty experts who teach skin care and cosmetics application techniques; offer guidance on nail care; and demonstrate how to manage hair loss using wigs, hats, scarves, and other head-coverings. Information on fitness, nutrition, and how to deal with cancer-related social situations may also be facilitated by health care professionals. Teens in active cancer treatment are eligible to attend Look Good Feel Better for Teens workshops. Each teen that attends receives a backpack filled with skin care, cosmetic, and personal care products donated by the beauty industry for use during and after the workshop. A take-home guide with complete information on program topics is also provided.
The Look Good Feel Better for Teens program is always free, product-neutral, and non-medical. The program does not promote any particular cosmetic or personal care product brand or manufacturer.
Look Good Feel Better for Teens group workshops are available in select locations across the country. For a list of locations hosting workshops, visit lookgoodfeelbetter.org, or call 1-800-395-LOOK (5665).
