Maria Guyette

Interim Senior Vice President, Talent Strategy

Maria Guyette is currently the interim senior vice president of Talent Strategy at the American Cancer Society. Maria’s career as a human resources professional spans 35 years working in private industry, state government, and the nonprofit sector.

Maria began her career in 1986 at the Center for Women in Government, a division of the Research Foundation of the State University of New York at Albany. In this role, Maria continued her graduate study research on gender and race bias in job evaluation and compensation structures. Because of her work, she was recruited by the Commissioner of the NYS Department of Civil Service to establish the NY State Pay Equity Unit, created under then Governor Mario M. Cuomo to address pay equity for state and municipal government employees.

Maria left state service to pursue her HR career in the private sector, holding HR leadership positions at The Chubb Group, Travelers, and MetLife. During her time in the financial services sector she built experience in all aspects of human resources including employee relations, organization development, learning and development, succession planning, employee engagement surveys, diversity and inclusion, and mergers and acquisitions. While at Travelers, Maria served on the mergers and acquisitions HR team, participating in three successful mergers. In her role at MetLife, she supported over 15 global IT executives and was the HR lead for all IT security breach investigations company-wide.

Maria joined the American Cancer Society in 2007 as vice president of Human Resources. She has also served as vice president of Diversity and Inclusion, and vice president of HR, Learning, and Organizational Development. During her tenure she established the diversity and inclusion team after a multi-year hiatus, directing (and facilitating) the inaugural diversity staff training series. She oversaw the launch of the current Manager Academy and Leadership Institute programs, contributing to curriculum design and classroom facilitation. Additionally, she has been responsible for enterprise engagement surveys and is a member of the leadership coaching cadre. Maria assumed the role of interim SVP talent strategy in April 2020, providing HR leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting enterprise restructuring.

Maria holds a BS in Psychology from Utica College of Syracuse University and a MS in Industrial Psychology and Organizational Development from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She and her husband Richard Medvetz reside in Albany, NY. Her daughter and son-in-law, Mia and Anthony Piro, live in Bedford Hills, NY. Maria donated a kidney in 2014 and is eager to discuss this extraordinary experience with anyone who might consider becoming a living donor. In 2021, she was invited to serve on the Board of Directors for Family Promise of the Capital Region, an inter-faith organization that supports families in their journey from homelessness to stability.
