Executive Vice President and Operating Officer, Midwest Division
David Benson is the executive vice president and operating officer of the American Cancer Society’s Midwest Division, which serves communities in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
As the Midwest Division’s most senior staff executive, David is responsible for driving the development and implementation of the Society’s mission and income strategies in its four states. He also works to engage corporate executives, community partners, high-level donors, and leadership volunteers in furthering the fight against cancer.
Society staff and thousands of volunteers in the Midwest Division provide over 60,000 direct services to more than 18,000 cancer patients each year; support community-based events and programs; engage and mobilize companies to advance our mission; and raise millions of dollars to help people stay well, get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer.
During his more than 15-year career with the Society, David has served in a variety of leadership positions. Prior to his current role, he served as the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Midwest Division. He guided staff and volunteer leaders to set goals and strategies for all promotional efforts, including public relations, corporate communications, creative services, web development and new media, market research, and analytics.
He has also worked in the areas of government relations, major gifts fundraising, and strategic planning.
David has a Master’s degree in Business Administration from St. Thomas University and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Religion from St. Olaf College. He resides in Minnesota with his wife Kristyn and daughters Eva and Elin.
