Getting the best care sometimes means cancer patients must travel away from home.  This can place an emotional and financial burden on patients and caregivers during an already challenging time.  Extended Stay America, a leading extended stay hotel chain, has committed to making this difficult situation easier for cancer patients and their families.

With a passion to support a charitable cause so close to the hearts of its employees, in 2013 Extended Stay America partnered with the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® to create the Hotel Keys of Hope℠ program,  which provides free and deeply discounted hotel stays for cancer patients  in need of potentially lifesaving treatment away from home.  To date, Extended Stay America has donated over 120,000 hotel room nights throughout the US, helping more than 15,000 patients and their families save over $7 million in lodging costs.  Extended Stay America hotels provide a unique, home-away-from-home for cancer patients receiving treatment;  amenities like fully equipped kitchens, free in-room Wi-Fi, on-site laundry facilities and pet-friendly room options, allow patients to lodge with their caregivers, children, and even beloved pets to provide healing.   In-room kitchens allow guests to maintain their dietary routines and also save money by avoiding restaurant costs.

The Hotel Keys of Hope℠ program has helped 15,000 cancer patients receive access to potentially lifesaving cancer treatments.

The program has helped cancer patients and their families save $7,000,000 in hotel expenses to ease their financial stress.

The Hotel Keys of Hope℠ program literally saved my life. After six months, I was so tired of living out of my car, staying at friends' houses, asking for favors, while in cancer treatment five days a week. I was at my wit's end and prayed, dear God, please provide me somewhere to stay, I can’t do this any longer. So when I learned about Extended Stay America’s lodging program in partnership with the American Cancer Society, I knew my prayers were answered.

Hotel Guest & Cancer Survivor - Customer Care

Being a complicated cancer case, I have to travel seven hours one-way to get the care I need. Having free lodging for those four nights means a lot less debt to worry about, allowing me to focus on getting through my surgery and healing. Due to the in-room kitchen, I was also able to continue eating healthy and not rely on restaurant food, which is also costly. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me and my family.

Stay Stories

Starting in November 2019, ACS and ESA will begin sharing firsthand “Stay Stories” from patients who are on the frontlines of the fight against cancer.  Audiences across the nation will have an opportunity to hear stories of resilience as these patients reveal their personal journeys navigating their treatment experience.

The first “Stay Story” will showcase the story of Candace Bennink who had to travel from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Houston, Texas to treat her Stage 4 lung cancer. In her own words, Candace tells the story of how she contacted the 1-800 cancer information line and learned about the Hotel Keys of HopeSM program. Since she had strict dietary requirements during her month-long stay in Houston for treatment, Extended Stay America was able to best accommodate those needs with the kitchen amenities within the room. As Candace states in the video “The Keys of Hope program is so important to cancer patients and their caregivers because it allows you to feel a little bit like home when you can’t be home.”

You can view Candace’s story below.

Delivering Hope to Children

Each year, over 10,000 children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with cancer. It's a diagnosis that can turn a family's life upside down. In an effort to bring awareness to the issue, Extended Stay America is introducing Hope the teddy bear, a cuddly symbol of kindness and comfort. Extended Stay America - through the support of their guests - is committing to providing 10,000 Hope bears to children's hospitals throughout America with the simple goal of bringing a smile to the face of a child battling cancer.

For those who would like to bring Hope home to a friend, family member or loved one, Hope can be ordered and delivered to your home for just $19.99. For each Hope bear purchased, Extended Stay America will donate $5.00 to the American Cancer Society towards pediatric cancer research.  Learn more at
