Global Cancer Prevention & Screening
With more than half of global cancer deaths being potentially preventable, prevention offers the most cost-effective and sustainable strategy to reduce suffering from cancer.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) leads global efforts to eliminate cancers that can be prevented—especially in lower-resource communities, where cancer deaths and suffering are highest and access to prevention is most limited.
We focus on solutions that are:
- Proven and effective in preventing cancer.
- Cost effective yet under-utilised.
Our Approach
We partner globally and locally - sharing resources and expertise in research, education, communications and advocacy to advance cancer prevention by:
- Increasing awareness and demand for proven cancer prevention tools.
- Equipping physicians, parents, and community leaders with clear, accessible information and resources.
- Strengthening national programs that prioritize cancer prevention.
- Driving coordinated action toward long-term, sustainable change.
Cervical Cancer Elimination
Global HPV Cancer Free aims to eliminate HPV cancers—starting with cervical cancer. Despite being preventable, cervical cancers remains the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide, causing approximately 350,000 deaths annually. By accelerating HPV vaccination, improving cervical cancer screening, and building sustainable pathways for prevention and early detection, we help reduce avoidable suffering.
In order to achieve this, we focus on normalising HPV vaccination as cancer prevention so that:
- Physicians recommend the vaccine routinely and confidently.
- Parents demand their children be vaccinated.
- Community leaders advocate for vaccine access and uptake.
- Policy-makers include and fund the HPV vaccine in national and sub-national programs.
Global HPV Cancer Free Components
Global HPV Cancer Free consists of three interconnected components that span global initiatives and country-level action. Explore each area below to learn more and access relevant resources.
Using insights from behavioral science, we co-develop locally led solutions to address real-world barriers faced by health care providers, ministries of health, cancer organizations, and parents. We currently collaborate with partners in India, Kenya, and Colombia to increase HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening rates.
ACS Global Academy
Our global team develops dynamic and practical resources for use in diverse settings across the cancer continuum of care. The Global Academy provides access to these resources with a focus on sustainable approaches to not only Learn but also Take Action.
