How Walmart is Helping Us Save Lives

Partner Since 1960

Walmart inspires customers, suppliers, and associates to join together in support of our vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Through their corporate giving, associate fundraising, and matching dollars, Walmart and its associates have contributed more than $100 million dollars to support the American Cancer Society since joining our mission in 1960.

You would be hard-pressed to find two organizations that are more representative of nationally recognized brands built on community grassroots design than Walmart and the American Cancer Society.

Walmart states on their website that the company seeks to “help our neighbors live better by strengthening the local communities where our associates and customers live.” Cancer impacts everyone, so the company is putting those words into action for the Society to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families.

Employee Engagement

Walmart and Sam’s Club and their associates continue to support the Society’s mission, through their participation as fundraising teams and volunteers in Relay For Lifer®  and Making Strides Against Breast Cancerr®  events and in ACS’ Hope Lodge communities across the country. In addition, Walmart’s own payroll deduction benefit - the Associate Giving Program - has generated over $2 million to help save more lives from cancer.

Corporate Initiatives

The company’s philosophy of “building a better world by helping people live better” has been put to work in new ways to help ACS ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer. Since the major decline in cancer screening rates due to COVID-19, Walmart has stepped up to make a positive impact in health equity and cancer prevention through:

  • Support of a health disparities grant from the Walmart Foundation that enabled the Society to set up community health advisors in select underserved communities where Walmart has a presence, which helped increase access to breast cancer and colon cancer screening.
  • A commitment to educate communities about HPV vaccination in all U.S. pharmacy locations aimed to help increase prevention of 6 types of HPV-related cancers, creating an opportunity for the Society to touch even more lives in more communities in need. Visit Walmart.com/HPV to learn more.

With stores within 10 miles of 90% of the U.S. population, we have the reach to make community health care easier and more impactful for families everywhere. Together, with the American Cancer Society, we can make progress in the fight against cancer.
