Why Cancer Screening Matters
In 2026, more than 2.1 million new cases of cancer are projected to be diagnosed, including 161,330 in Texas. For some communities, social and financial barriers can make cancer screening more difficult.
Data from the American Cancer Society shows that Texas falls behind the national average in several key cancer screening rates. Only 28% of males in Texas age 50 and older are up to date with their prostate screening compared to 31% nationally. Additionally, only 66% of Texas women aged 45 and older are current on screening mammograms compared to 69% nationally. Colorectal cancer screening rates are also lower, with 66% of eligible Texans screened compared to 69% nationwide. These gaps highlight the importance of increasing awareness, connecting people to convenient screening services, and reducing disparities in access to lifesaving care.
