Getting to a healthy weight
To maintain a healthy weight, you need to balance the number of calories you take in with the number you use consistently over time. Even if you take in more calories than usual one day, you can still maintain your weight if you reduce your calorie intake or burn more calories than usual another day.
To stay at a healthy weight, you can:
- Focus on eating a healthy diet.
- Be active.
If you have excess weight and want to lose weight, the best way to get to a healthy weight is to limit the calories you take in and burn more calories through physical activity.
To get to a healthy weight, you can:
- Focus on eating a healthy diet
- Be active
- Reduce your daily calories by 500 through diet, exercise, or both. Or you can reduce your total weekly calories.
- Aim to lose 1-2 pounds per week.
A plan to get to and stay at a healthy weight will be different for everyone. You should always work with your health care team to develop a specific plan for you.
