Helmneh M. Sineshaw, MD, MPH

Principal Scientist, Cancer Disparity Research

what inspires me most...

“The power of quality research. The way that evidence from research contributes to the reduction of suffering and death from cancer and to the eradication of disparities in cancer care and outcomes across all populations.”

At ACS since 2012

As Principal Scientist, Helmneh M. Sineshaw, MD, MPH, conducts research to understand how social, socioeconomic, individual, and structural factors affect cancer care and outcomes and contribute to disparities. He collaborates with scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, Oregon Health Sciences University, Memphis Baptist Cancer Center, Medical University of South Carolina, and other institutions across the United States.

Research focus and accomplishments

Sineshaw’s research aims to uncover barriers to cancer care and to identify differences in cancer outcomes by understanding where, how much, for whom, and why cancer care varies.

He examines progress against disparities in cancer care and outcomes. He also evaluates emerging disparities and factors that influence access to up-to-date, high-quality care and outcomes.

The goal of Sineshaw’s work is to contribute evidence that informs health policy and clinical practice in order to reduce disparities across all populations. His research has contributed evidence about the role modifiable factors, such as health insurance, income, and availability of a healthcare provider, have on racial/ethnic disparities in cancer care and outcomes.
